Sex for Grades: undercover inside Nigerian and Ghanaian universities – BBC Africa Eye documentary

Universities in Nigeria and Ghana have been plagued by stories of sexual harassment by lecturers and professors for decades. Allegations include a wide array of abuses, from blackmailing students for sex in exchange for marks and admission to lewd comments and grooming.

After gathering dozens of testimonies, BBC Africa Eye sent undercover journalists posing as students inside the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the University of Ghana to capture footage of the sexual harassment.

Reporter Kiki Mordi, who knows first-hand how devastating sexual harassment can be, reveals what happens behind the closed doors of some of West Africa’s most prestigious universities.

Further information and support for anyone affected by sexual assault can be found through the BBC Action Line:

  1. This is very disgusting, however they are some female students who offer their private parts to lecturers for grades. Especially those so called unislayqueens marjority of them do that.

  2. Wow ! Your work is incredibly amazing !!!
That's so powerful and so important, what you're doing ! Nobody seems to dear standing against it, even the proper victims of these disgusting practices ! Thank you for stepping in ! Your work is truly awesome, keep the fight up !

  3. Y'all women are so tough. I'd just like to take a moment to appreciate these beautifully courageous and strong African women who have gone out into the field to expose a taboo topic within a society that dehumanizes the values of females. We as a nation of many creeds, need more individuals who are willing to brave the ugly truths of our polluted world. Dare to stray from the pack.

  4. good job exposing the evil lecturers but l think (my opinion) you haven't done a good job hiding the identity of these victims. They can be easily identified by the people whom they went/go to university with.

  5. Take a look at British universities to .It is a well known fact there is a lot of sexual prostitution for good grades ect re. Lecturers who have enormous power and students who will go to any lengths to get a good degree. It can be the difference between getting a first or second or third degree. All this is well known in the faculties concerned ,and there are many.

  6. Ithis is sickening. It happened to my me in Zimbabwe too.The lecture literally would come to my house and wait on my door holding condoms.till i stopped attending school and doing my work at home.He was the HEad of the department and my supervisor so reporting automatically meant I would fail my degree.his wife was heavily pregnant and he had the guts to do that to me.Now I heard he moved to another university,I can’t imagin what he is doing to his new victims 😕

  7. The girls probably wanted those grades so bad that they gave up their stinky pussy willingly, now they're crying because they feel ashamed of what they did. Save me the fake cries.

  8. The caption 'sex for grades' doesn't match with te video provided, particularly the one of Prof. Gyampo of the university of Ghana…it is carkingly sardonic and very iksome to see a 'shabby' work of this kind from BBC

  9. No one is in denial that wherever men and women are, there will be issues that are unacceptable, and sexual harrassment is one of many. But this is no evidence of sex for grades, but rather, the usual western propaganda crap from non other than the BBC. When it comes to African matters, no western media has any credibility left! We know their ways. Their clandestine agenda has always been to degrade the great African state so they can claim the moral high-ground. We know better, and I hope these foreign organisations can learn to keep out of African matters. Every society, state or continent has it's issues, and just like everybody else, Africans can deal with their own matters.

  10. I want to gather ALL the women in the world and put us all in hiding from MEN for years and years…women and children! Some times we need to run from them and work hard together and appreciate life not having to be sexually orientated at all celibacy…and work cook talk and raise the children if you have children and you are a mature women…LETS JUST RUN AWAY FOR EVER! Forget everything let them have it all and LET'S GO!!!🤔

  11. I shed tears after watching this, men men men men remember this what goes around comes around, even your own daughters will one day go to university and if you recall what you did to somebody's daughter years back……….that will be a torture in your old life, may God help and protect our young ladies.

  13. what a shame for the whole continent! I never thought it took that proportion, to all of you who have been a victim of such a horrible experience, you can overcome this, you have the power within you, don't give up. this is definitely not the way that we as African men should be seen.

  14. This is a wonderful start. Thank you Ladies for your bravery and courage. I know the feeling.

But after this, then what? Exposing one or two men in university doesn’t even leave a dent. These men are in our homes, churches, schools, jobs, neighborhoods. They are everywhere and very much protected by the construct of a patriarchal society.

This abuse will continue to persist until we stop equating being a “male” with God. Ours is a society that exalts men and demotes women and backs it up with the Bible.

  15. To any woman who has been a victim,

I pray that the Lord Jesus Christ heals you and these women in Jesus name. I know the pain must be a lot and it’s easy to carry those hurt and pain for years that grows into anger, bitterness, fear, depression etc. but I know a God who is able to heal and save completely. May God be merciful upon these men who commit such atrocities and protect these women. I love you and Jesus loves you all so much despite all these unfortunate encounter. God is good and don’t let other peoples mistake cause you to view God differently. God is never the issue. Jesus Christ empathizes with you and can help you though this.
